Meeting Thursday, February
2 at 6:30 pm at the Friends Center.
To Philadelphia area activists,
We are contacting a number of
activists and political groups in Philadelphia to see if we can work
together to build an important event of national significance. The
United National Antiwar Coalition is organizing an educational and
activist conference in Stamford CT on the weekend of March 23-25. There
will be a range of national and international speakers, workshops and
an opportunity to discuss and vote on an action proposal.
The draft
action proposal is being worked on now and will be released for
discussion soon. All participants will then have an opportunity
to propose changes, amendments, and additions.
This exciting conference should be
of interest to a wide range of political activists of all ages. There
will be close to 40 workshops and panels, covering topics such as
global warming and the environment, the Occupy movement, the fight
against police brutality and the prisons, defense of civil liberties
against government attack, and how to resist the employers' offensive
against the labor movement.
We are hoping that we can mobilize a
large and representative layer of the Philadelphia area to Stamford.
Doing so will require publicity, fundraising and effort. The
Occupy movement signals a shift in popular sentiment - not only against
the rule of big money over the lives of working people, but also
against the wars the 1 percent wages to line their pockets with the
wealth of the globe.
One purpose of the conference will
be building for the demonstrations in Chicago against the NATO and G8
meetings.
We would
like to propose that we hold a meeting for the purpose of building the
conference as soon as possible and work out a common approach.
Another consideration is the NATO G8 meeting and the demonstrations to
be held there.
While we
hope to encourage a lot of folks to go to Chicago, the reality is
that many won't be able to afford the trip. Perhaps we could hold an
educational event on the nature of NATO?
Please contact PAW if you are
interested in helping out with this project. We wouold like
to hear everyone's ideas and proposals.]
